   With Rockin' the Suburbs, Ben Folds's music started to take a more serious turn. However, on his second solo record, Ben Folds is more serious and deeper than ever. For those fans of Ben Folds Five's witty, rocking style, this album may not be for you. The maturity level on this record is much higher than before, and so is the musicianship.

   Ben Folds is at his best when he melds the acerbic with the heartfelt, a balancing act that he's honed to perfection on the warm and ballad-heavy Songs for bumbkotsoecenvadaterssatevigomul.xyzinfog track "Bastard," with a fuzzed-out bassline right out of , kick-starts a record that plays like a show in reverse. The meat's all upfront, so those expecting a show-stopping encore will just have to listen to it.

   Songs for Silverman is the second solo album from Ben Folds, and his first studio outing in 4 years. It's a work of subtely and maturity from a master of melodious piano-pop. From "Battle of Who Could Care Less" in through "Rockin' the Suburbs" on his last album, Folds has always written songs which humorously tweak the conventions of pop youth culture, but that perspective is noticeably.

   As a big fan of Ben Folds (and Ben Folds Five), I had high hopes for this album. However it just doesn't live up to its potential, for me. Sure, the tracks are mostly quite pleasantly melodic, but nothing about them grabs me, unlike Ben Folds' better work (such as the excellent Rockin The Suburbs)/5().
